Mentro Lluest Christmas Fair

Mentro Lluest held a Christmas Fair on Saturday December the 8th to raise funds and raise the charity's profile within the community.

Despite the forecast the rain held off for most of the day and more people visited than we had expected. There was plenty so see and do, from wreath-making and face-painting to a visit from Santa and numerous craft stalls from local craft-makers.

Rain holds off for Mentro Lluest Open Day

Mentro Lluest held its annual Open Day on Saturday 12th May. Despite torrential rain in the week leading up to the 12th, on the day we were very lucky with only a few light showers.
Bedding plants, hanging baskets, organic vegetable plants, hanging baskets, carniverous plants and containers all sold like hot-cakes.
Students were present to answer peoples questions and take part in practical displays like container planting.
A photographer from the BBC was on hand and has created a wonderful slideshow of the day which can be seen at the BBC's mid Wales site.

Calling all volunteers

After a quiet couple of months, things are really picking up speed again at Mentro Lluest. Both the organic and nursery sections are working flat-out to ensure that we have plenty of produce for Open Day on the 12th of May.
Mentro Lluest is now calling all volunteers, existing and new, to come and help.

Mentro Lluest has received an e-ffective Connection Award through BT Community Connections – a nationwide award scheme that connects community and voluntary groups to the internet.

Mentro Lluest forges partnership with local hotel

Mentro Lluest has formed a mutually beneficial partnership with the Conrah Hotel in Chancery, near Aberystwyth. The hotel, which is set in 20 acres of beautifully landscaped ground, has donated its vegetable garden to the charity.

Second student awards of 2006

Due to the success of Mentro Lluest's education project in 2006, it was necessary to hold a second awards presentation on December the 13th. 12 Students completed courses and 9 were present to receive their certificates from Michael Jones, Mayor of Aberystwyth.

School Visit

Year 5 pupils from Llwyn yr Eos Primary School came to visit Mentro Lluest on October 12th as part of their vegetable project in conjunction with Organic Centre Wales. They toured the organic growing area were they had a chance to pick their own vegetables, many of which they had never seen outside a supermarket.

Students Award Presentation 2006

Mentro Lluest held its annual awards presentation on 25th September. It was a time to celebrate the hard work and success of the students over the last year. Staff, trustees, volunteers, family and friends attended the event, which was held in the training room on the Llanbadarn site, to watch the students receive their certificates.

Volunteer News

2006 was a very busy year for volunteers as more of the site was turned over to crop production than ever before. As well as ensuring that this was the most successful year of the Organic Veg Box Scheme to date, volunteers worked tirelessly, encircling the entire growing area with rabbit proof fencing.

Nursery and Organic Trading news

In our Nursery department students and staff are busy propagating, pricking out, and nurturing the plants ready for springtime, ensuring that there are plenty of good quality bedding plants and annuals ready in time for the height of the buying season.

For those who are looking for something a bit different, we also have a range of succulents and carnivorous plants which are always popular, especially with children of all ages.

In addition to this the organic box scheme, which was established in 2004, is set to return in the spring.
